A
true Teppanyaki treat
The night we had the good fortune to go to this, the
newest in the Slowboat chain, the restaurant had only
been open a very short while. Based in the new and
very very stylish Safari centre, just opposite the
entrance to the Pirámides de Arona in Las Américas,
the location is quite perfect for a top quality restaurant.
Upstairs away from the designers stores, the large
terraces overlook the fountains of the Mare Nostrum
resort. Indoor a décors is a perfect reflection
of the clean functional yet elegant lines associated
with Japan and Japanese design-simple, classical,
colours are muted and shoothing, wooden tables with
perfectly understated tablecloth.
The place setting too are the exactly right with functional
clean square and rectangular plates, and something
that I personally adore-proper large fabric napkins.
Chopsticks of course at every setting- but lo and
behold, the Slowboat people have come up with something
particularly brilliant- "beginner chopsticks"
made in the restaurant, and designed for those of
us who are still at the fumbling stage when it comes
to manoeuvring these eating instruments.
Owner (and son of the original Mr Slowboat) Robbie,
whose father is from Liverpool, suggested we go for
the Miso menu, which has a bit of everything, and
we were lucky enough to get a seat at the best table
in the house.
This is where the fun and food are best. A large open
square, seating about 20, with a large hot plate on
each side where the food is prepared. No mater if
you have arrived with your beloved, a mate or a parent,
you will know nearly everyone at the table by de the
end of your meal, and be on intimate terms with it
course of your meal if you so desire, as your friendly
chef will take you through each stage of the preparation.
This is somewhere for a romantic meal for two or four
or six, a great place to bring your mates, your folks,
or even the kids who will no doubt decide after one
night are Teppanyaki they no longer want to be a scuba
diver/action hero/ or steam engine driver- being a
Chinese chef is all that will matter from now on.
