In
the facilities of the Aqualand dolphinary of Tenerife, and
for the second time since it's opening, three dolphins which
belong to the species Tursiops truncatus were born. The
gestation lasted for more than 48 weeks.
During
that long time, ecographies and veterinary controls have been
regularly made to control the health of the three mothers
and the evolution of their youngs. Two of the females are
expert mothers because they gave birth in 1997 and 2000. These
youngs had integrated perfectly well to the social group of
dolphins that inhabit these facilities. The third mother,
Yemaya, of only 7 years old is one of the youngs that was
born in 1997, the reason why it's young will be the second
generation born in this dolphinary, a hole success.
First of the births was on the 30th of June. Cande, the oldest
and most dominant female of the group gave birth to an other
beautiful female that weighed about 14 kg and measured about
120 cm. The duration of the birth from the breakage of the
fountain till the coming out of the young, was of two hours
and forty-five minutes. The 4th of July, Gara, mother for
the second time in this dolphinary, gave birth to a 12 kg
and 115 cm. male (approximately). And the 14th of July, Yemaya,
gave birth to a 10 kg and 110 cm in length male. Yemaya, even
though being a dolphin born in a controlled place (dolphinary),
showed an intact maternal instinct and behaved like a true
mother.
The
three youngs evolve perfectly in the reproduction swimming pool
of the dolphinary, where two biologists have been taking registries
of sound and behavior for some months, to develop investigations
on the behavior of mothers before, during and after the births,
as well as to investigate the cognitive capacity and the communication
of the newborn ones. The conclusions of these investigations
will be show and put to the disposition of organisms, institutions
and organizations which study these cetaceans. This extraordinary
event, put the facilities of the Aqualand dolphinary of Tenerife
between one of the most successful reproduction centers in Europe.
An this is because of the quality in the facilities, the social
stability of the group of dolphins, as well as to the professionalism
of the equipments of the dolphinary.
